Another hit for city’s water supply

Parts of the city might be left without water after another major water pipe burst.

Large parts of the city might have to wait for the water supply to be restored after another major water pipe burst in Lynnwood on Thursday afternoon.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said most of the areas affected by Wednesday’s Bulk Water interruption currently have water except for Lynnwood.

“There is now a new leak near the corner of Lynnwood Road and Rubida Street. It is a 700mm diameter steel pipe and it mainly affects Lynnwood.”

Mashigo said a team of plumbers were busy repairing the water leak.

“We will advise on the extent of the problem as soon as they [the plumbers] have done an assessment of the situation.”

Ward councillor Frans Smith said the water interruptions came after Bulk Water tested a pipeline running from Garsfontein to other parts of Pretoria.

“Bulk Water did repairs on the line and then tested it. They did not, however, warn any of the residents of these steps.”

Smith said the new water pipe leak is due to high water pressure in the pipeline.

“Water was pumped into the pipes to fill up the reservoirs, but the water pressure was probably too high for the pipe too handle.”

Mashigo said water tankers have deployed to different parts of the city.

“There are currently water tankers at the Wilgers Hospital, at the CSIR as well as in Silverton.”

Smith said there was no indication of when the water would be restored.
