Water restored to most parts of Pretoria

The metro said Queenswood was the only neighbourhood experiencing water interruptions on Friday morning.

Water supply was restored to big parts of Pretoria after the city was plagued with water interruptions for a week.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said all areas that were previously affected had water on Friday morning except for Queenswood.

“The Queenswood reservoir level is critically low at 8%. A team is investigating and will resolve the problem.”

Mashigo said the current available water capacity in the reservoir should be enough to last until Friday afternoon when the problem should be resolved.

Water interruptions started earlier this week when Bulk Water tested a pipeline running from Garsfontein to other parts of Pretoria.

“Bulk Water did repairs on the line and then tested it. They did not, however, warn any of the residents of these steps,” said ward councillor Frans Smith.

On Thursday morning most of the repair work was completed and reservoirs around the city started filling up.

Residents however experienced another setback on Thursday afternoon when another major water pipeline burst in Lynnwood.

“There is now a new leak near the corner of Lynnwood Road and Rubida Street. It is a 700mm diameter steel pipe and it mainly affects Lynnwood,” said Mashigo on Thursday afternoon.

The pipe was repaired by Thursday night after which water started filling up into reservoirs once again.

“The 700mm line was repaired and parts of Lynnwood are already receiving water. The system is filling up so in the morning [Friday] almost everyone should have water,” Lindela said on Thursday night.

Smith said the water pipe leak on Thursday was due to high water pressure in the pipeline.

“Water was pumped into the pipes to fill up the reservoirs, but the water pressure was probably too high for the pipe too handle.”
