Cancer, diabetes fundraiser rocks Barnyard Theatre

The show to raise funds for cancer and diabetes patients was a tribute to ABBA and Queen under the theme One Vision.

A music show to raise funds in support of diabetes and cancer awareness, lit up the Barnyard Theatre in Pretoria on Saturday.

The show paid tribute to ABBA and Queen under the theme One Vision, and the worthy cause attracted hundreds of people.

Mariaan Marais, of Diabetes SA’s Pretoria branch, said the show was a joint venture between Cansa and Diabetes SA to raise money for cancer survivors and diabetics.

Marais said both organisations needed a lot of money to operate and to make a change in the lives of diabetics and cancer patients.

The sold out event, Marais believes, would raise the necessary money.

“Besides raising money, we also wanted to ensure people had a fun-filled, relaxed afternoon out,” she said.

“I thought it was the perfect campaign because [cancer is] so easy to prevent and something I can relate to.”

A cancer survivor said Diabetes SA and Cansa would use the money to strengthen healthcare and support programmes to the greater benefit of the public.

The most cost-effective, long-term strategy for cancer control is to reduce the risk through education and early detection.

The organisations’ main focus was to increase the public’s awareness of the benefits of an improved lifestyle – a healthy diet, minimising exposure to environmental carcinogens (cancer-causing substances) and regular exercise.
