DA questions IEC independence

ANC to challenge DA at electoral court over election rigging claims made by Solly Msimanga.

The DA is confident that it will perform well in Tshwane but worried about the independence of the Elections Commission of SA (IEC).

The party said its concerns arose after reports of irregularities during the pre-election preparations.

“We were worried yesterday when we heard that there are number of stations that didn’t open on time, there were a number of incidents in which people’s special votes were not put in the correct envelopes, there were instances in which they (stations) didn’t have the voters’ roll on time,” said DA mayoral candidate for Tshwane, Solly Msimanga.

“So the IEC will be scrutinised closely this time around given what happened in Tlokwe in the build up to this local elections.”

Msimanga said this while interacting with the residents of Mamelodi on the final day of his election campaign.

Msimanga said he was concerned that the ruling party, whose grip on the Tshwane metro was under immense threat, might attempt to temper with the election process.

“We’ve seen that a number of times even in a number of by-elections where they [ANC] were feeling threatened, they tried to bus people in from outside.

So we know they are going to try their tricks.”

But the ANC refuted this claim as an admission of defeat by the DA.

ANC Tshwane spokesperson, Tebogo Joala said: “the DA is already trying to cast doubt on a highly respected institution – the IEC.

This is a clear affirmation and admission of defeat ahead of the polls.”

He said his party would look to challenging this claim in the Electoral Court.
