Voter turn-out appears higher
Although statistics can still change, it would appear that more South Africans participated in the 2016 local elections.

Voter turn-out for this year’s local government elections currently stand at 58%, slightly higher than in 2011, but this figure could still change.
Briefing the media at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) nerve centre in Pretoria West, CEO Mosotho Moepya said as the ballot papers from the larger polling stations came in, the voter turn-out figure could differ.
Meanwhile, the IEC’s latest national count showed that the ANC was currently leading the race, having won 25 councils, 1 181 wards and 113 proportional representative seats (53%), followed by the Democratic Alliance (DA) with seven councils, 368 wards and 104 proportional representative seats (28%).
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) has won no councils, but has taken 63 wards and 35 proportional representation seats (7,2%) and the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) has 63 wards (5,4%).
Moepya said by 11.00 on Thursday, 77% of all the results had been captured.
Some 99% of the results in the Northern Cape had been captured while Gauteng amd Mpumalanga were dragging behind with about 47% completed.
“The IEC is aware that South Africa is now eagerly awaiting the outcome of the elections but we appeal for patience from all stakeholders to allow the process to follow due diligence and accuracy,” Moepya said.
In terms of legislation the commission must declare results within seven days after elections.
