No coalition talks yet, ANC still in the lead in Tshwane
Julius Malema does not rule out talks with any political party regarding a possible coalition government in the metros
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) have not been approached by any party about the possibility of forming a coalition government in any of the metros.
EFF leader Julius Malema on Friday afternoon said his party had also not discussed the issue of a coalition with any other political organisation.
Malema’s statement followed predictions by observers and analysts that neither the African National Congress (ANC) nor the Democratic Alliance (DA) will get a majority vote in the Tshwane or Johannesburg metros in the 2016 local elections.
That leaves the EFF, which were currently holding about 10% of the vote in both metros, with a lot of political power in the councils.
“We have prevented the ANC from receiving 60% of the vote,” Malema said, thanking the country for the support of his party.
Referring to the ANC as the most arrogant political party in the country, Malema said the performance of the EFF, which was only formed a mere three years ago, had humbled the ANC.
“They are now running around like headless chickens, not knowing where it is going from here,” Malema said.
He said he would not approach anybody at this stage about coalition talks, but will discuss the matter with opposition parties when so requested.
According to Malema, possible coalitions with any party were not out of the question at this stage as “the will of the people would prevail.”
On Friday at 16:00 the ANC had the lead in Tshwane with 42.64%, DA with 42.49% and EFF with 10.91%.
In Johannesburg, DA took the lead with 41.87%, ANC 41.69% and EFF 10.59%.
