IEC results on a nail biting edge
Major parties are neck-and-neck in the IEC counting process.
On Friday afternoon the DA and ANC were head-to-head in the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) polls.
At 14:30 DA was still in the lead with 42.91% and ANC hot on its heals with 42.31%.
The EFF slightly improved from 10.47% to 10.75%.
For any party to run the municipality, it needs at least 50% of the council to vote in its favour and as such a coalition government seems to be on the cards as things stand.
Several EFF officials had, however, made it clear over the past few days that it would be very hesitant to enter into a coalition with the ANC, but observers warned that it was early days and that much could still happen.
Although the IEC on Thursday said that the final results for Tshwane were expected by Friday afternoon, estimations now indicated that the tally would only be completed by midnight on Friday.
Briefing the media on Friday afternoon, SA Council of Churches (SACC) observer mission head Bishop Malusi Mpumlwana said the country was now entering an exciting age of coalition governance.
“Negotiations and compromise will be the order of the day in several councils after this election,” he said, adding that political parties would therefore not always be able to stick to its election manifestos as coalition partners would have to be considered as well.
This will be a new concept to governing local municipalities in the country, he sad.
In the Johannesburg municipality, ANC is lead yet again with 41.8% against DA’s 41.68%. The EFF remains constant with its 10.6%.
