Crawford College joins Olympic fever

Crawford College honouring former pupils taking part in the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Crawford College Pretoria was the finishing point for the #CrawfordTrackTheTorch relay on Friday afternoon.

The relay commemorated Crawford’s own Olympians who included swimmers Cameron van der Burgh, Jarred Crous, Michael Meyer, Michelle Weber and Dylan Bosch.

The relay started at Crawford La Lucia (Durban) on 19 July and ended in Pretoria on Friday.

Gerhard Zandberg, an old Crawfordian and Olympian, carried the torch to Pretoria.

“It’s a huge honour to come back here and carry the torch. I have been part of the SA Olympic swimming team twice, 2004 and 2008. And I can tell you it’s such an amazing experience. There are challenges obviously in the Olympics, but one needs to keep your head up and focus on the task at hand.”

Zandberg advised the young swimmers and athletes to always set goals.

“There needs to be enough passion in you to be able to get to the next level. My advice to the young ones is simple, work diligently and set goals for yourself,” he said.

Principal of Crawford Primary Ian Mcleod said it was an honour that the #CrawfordTrackTheTorch relay finished in Pretoria.

“It definitely set the scene for the Olympics starting tonight. This will also give an opportunity to the children to see their heroes in action and also just become aware of the Olympics,” he said.

Mcleod, who is a former professional referee, added that a lot of work was done by the college to ensure the young ones were receiving training.

“We have programmes that enable the children to excel and we also encourage them to keep working hard. With our former Crawfordians taking part in Rio it keeps them motivated.”
