DA takes 93 council seats in capital

Final tally shows seats won by the various political parties in the 2016 local elections.

As activity is rapidly winding down at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) national results operations centre and the count came to an end in the Tshwane metropolitan municipality, it has been confirmed that the Democratic Alliance (DA) has won 93 of the 214 seats in the council.

The DA has taken 43,58% of the total valid votes with 39 ward seats and 54 proportional representative (PR) seats won.

The African National Congress (ANC) has 89 seats – 68 wards seats and 21 PR seats – with 41,59% of the votes in the capital city.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), which emerged as the king maker in the 2016 local government election, managed to get 25 PR seats, with 11.68% of the votes.

Whichever party can form a coalition with the EFF, will run the capital city for the next five years.

It is speculated that coalition talks had already commenced, but this could not be confirmed and all three parties remained tight-lipped about the issue.

EFF leader Julius Malema said on Friday decisions on whom his party would form a coalition with, would be determined by the people.

At the time he said the EFF had not been approached by any party about joining forces in any of the metros.

Other parties have put up a poor showing in Tshwane. The Freedom Front Plus (FF+) managed to win four seats while the ACDP, Cope and the PAC managed one seat each.

By 15:00 on Saturday afternoon, the Johannesburg metro’s final results had not been posted by the IEC yet.  At the time, the ANC was leading by a small margin of 2,03% with 42,84% of the total vote, the DA 40,81% and the EFF with 10,66%.
