Zuma’s address disrupted by “rape” protest

Protesters had to be removed physically from a function at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) results centre in Pretoria West when they attempted to disrupt an address by president Jacob Zuma on Saturday evening.

In a move that took security by surprise, a small group of protesters attempted to disrupt the official address by President Jacob Zuma at the IEC’s closing function of the 2016 local government elections.

“Remember Khwezi 10 years later,” posters stated, held by the protesters, referring to the woman who had laid a charge of rape against Zuma.  The president was acquitted on the rape charge at the time.

The protesting women were physically removed by security and caused quite a stir as they screamed and objected to being forced out of the venue.

When Zuma approached the podium on Saturday evening, members of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) also vacated the venue en masse, causing a disruption.

Zuma, however continued with his address, congratulating all political parties for participating in a free and fair election.

“We are now one people and those elected by the people to run our councils must govern in the best interest of all South Africans,” Zuma said.

“All concerns raised by the electorate in the running up to the election must also be addressed,” he said, adding that the changes in local government had been successfully achieved through the ballot box.
