Shots fired during hijacked vehicle chase
“The TMPD officers called for back-up after seeing guns inside the vehicle.”
Shots were fired before a man was arrested in possession of a hijacked vehicle in the east of Pretoria on Wednesday morning.
A man was shot and wounded at the Mooikloof Ridge Centre entrance.
Tshwane metro police department (TMPD) spotted a vehicle with two men in Mooikloof, said police.
Spokesperson Captain Marissa van der Merwe said TMPD was in pursuit of a white Toyota Corolla.
“The TMPD officers called for back-up after the vehicle failed to stop on police request.”
She said the vehicle accelerated and TMPD maintained pursuit, later joined by Garsfontein police.
“Police received confirmation that the vehicle was hijacked.”
Reports indicated TMPD fired shots at the rear window of the vehicle after firearms were noticed inside the vehicle.
The vehicle with the suspects collided with another vehicle coming out of the Mooikloof Ridge entrance.
Van der Merwe said a man fled from the car on foot. The other suspect had been wounded and could not get out of the car.
“He was shot in the upper body. The man was arrested on the scene and taken to hospital with serious injuries.”
The motorist in the other vehicle, a Jetta, was also taken to hospital.
A docket for possession of a hijacked vehicle was opened at the Boschkop police station.
“The man would appear in court later this week,” said Van Der Merwe.
