A man was shot dead after being caught stealing cable in Wonderboom South on Friday, police have said.
Police spokesperson, Constable Tumisang Moloto said security company, Combined Private Investigation guards alleged they found three men cutting cables around 04:00, and that when the men saw them, they ran with the cable.
“A chase ensued. Two of the men escaped while the other one couldn’t run anymore,” Moloto said.
“It is further alleged that he then took out a knife and charged at the guards after they instructed him to put his knife down.”
He said the guards fired.
“The man believed to be in his 30s was certified dead on scene by the paramedics.”
Moloto said when the police arrived on the scene, he was lying in a pool of blood with a bullet wound to his upper body.
He said the security company was guarding the cables on the corner of De Beer Street and 17th Avenue.
Moloto said case of murder was opened at the Woonderboompoort police station and the other two men were still at large.
According to ward 1 councillor, Elma Nel cable thefts have become a very serious problem in Capital Park.
“Cable theft is a issue that must be urgently addressed.”
