State in court over Oscar’s sentence
The prosecutor implored the court not see the application as an insult.
The National Prosecuting Authority was seeking leave in the High Court in Johannesburg on Friday to appeal against the six-year murder sentence of Oscar Pistorius.
Prosecutor Gerrie Nel implored the court not to see the application for leave to appeal as an insult, but said the bid should be taken seriously.
He said the Pistorius’ sentence for killing his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013 was “shockingly inappropriate”.
“We want the sentence appeal to go to the Supreme Court of Appeal to be heard by same judges who found Pistorius guilty of murder,” said Nel.
“We don’t have to convince this court. The Supreme Court of Appeal might make another finding.”
The Paralympian was convicted for culpable homicide and jailed for five years in 2014. The State’s efforts to have this turned into a murder conviction succeeded in December last year.
The High Court in Pretoria sentenced him to six-years in prison on the murder charge in June this year.
The Paralympian had already served a year in prison after his culpable homicide conviction.
