Charges laid against Tuks student

Criminal charges have been laid against by a former Student Representative Council (SRC) member of the University of Pretoria.
The crimen injuria and other charges against Luvuyo Menziwa were prompted by a message he posted Monday, expressing hate for white people.
Brooklyn police spokesperson Colette Weilbach confirmed a docket was opened at the station on Tuesday afternoon.
“The charge was laid and statements were filed,” she said, adding the matter would go to court for a ruling.
AfriForum Youth lodged the complaint against Menziwa, contending that his utterances clearly constituted hate speech.
Spokesperson Henrico Barnard said charges of intimidation, crimen injuria and incitement of violence were laid.
He said the youth group was told investigations were underway, adding: “These things take time.”
Menziwa was suspended from the university SRC on Tuesday.
UP spokesperson Anna-Retha Bouwer confirmed this and said Menziwa had until Friday to vacate his post.
“In terms of its internal code of conduct, the SRC of the University of Pretoria has suspended SRC study finances officer, Mr Luvuyo Menziwa.
“This is on account of the publication of offensive statements attributed to Mr Menziwa on social media, and subsequently on various other media platforms,” Bouwer said.
She said an urgent investigation was underway by the university in terms of its disciplinary code for students.
“Proper channels were being followed for a way forward. Hate speech and incitement of violence will not be tolerated at University of Pretoria.”
Menziwa was suspended for a Facebook post, saying that he hated white people.
“I hate white people: white privilege, white dominance, white arrogance, white monopoly capital and white superiority,” he wrote.
“F*ck white people, just get me a bazooka or AK47 so I can do the right thing and kill these demon posed humans.”
The message ended with: “NB: There is a distinction between the whites and white people as per my knowledge and understanding.”
Menziwa could not be reached immediately.
