House robberies in SA on the rise
The past three years alone saw a rise of 21 percent in house robberies.
House robberies in South Africa have jumped by 63% in the past 10 years, reveals the latest crime statistics announced in Parliament on Friday.
This type of crime had shown a 2.7-percent rise in the past year, which meant 20 850 homes were robbed in this period.
Dr Johan Burger, senior researcher at the Institute for Security Studies, said house robberies had increased by more than 21% in the past three years.
“There has been an overall increase of about 21% over the period of three years. For the period 2011-2012 there were 16 766 house robberies across the country.”
The institute of Security Studies said proper policing could help reduce burglaries and home robberies.
The 2016 crime figures also revealed that the murder rate had gone up by 4.9 percent. Hijackings were up by 14.3 percent, suggesting that police were battling to deal with organised crime in the country.
