Smash ‘n grab hot spots in Pretoria
When crime hot spots are unavoidable – how to be cautious.
With the cold of winter fading, it is once again time be wary of outdoor crime activities – such as smash-and-grab thefts.
With a view to this, take note of Pretoria’s most dangerous smash-and-grab hot spots:
– Eeufees Road coming off the N14.
– John Vorster Drive off-ramps on N1
– Nellmapius Drive off-ramp on R21• R55 off-ramps on N14.
– New Road off-ramps on N1.
– Delmas Road and Nossob Street.
– Cnr Es’kia Mphahlele Drive & Johannes Ramokgoase Street.
– Cnr Es’kia Mphahlele Drive & Bloed Street.
– Cnr University & Lynnwood roads.
– Cnr Meiring Naude Road & Cussonia Ave.
– Watermeyer Street off-ramps on N4.
– Garsfontein Road off-ramp on N1 North.
– R80 Mapobane Freeway.
– Paul Kruger Street and Lavender Road.
– CR Swart Drive under the N1 bridge.
– Cnr Christiaan de Wet & Wilgerood roads.
– Cnr Cambridge & Witkoppen roads.
– Woodlands Drive.
– Pretoria Main Road & 1st Avenue.
– Watermeyer Streets off-ramps.
– Magnolia Dal.
– Cnr Pretorius and Jan Shoba streets

“The cautious driver will be able to prevent most smash-and-grab crimes. If there is nothing to grab there is no reason for the window to be smashed,” Arrive Alive said.
“Since we launched the Boot-up-or-lose-it campaign in Tshwane Central, there is only more or less one incident per month involving a smash-and-grab, said police spokesperson Captain Collete Weilbach.
Some safety tips from the SA Police Service website on how to avoid becoming a victim of this crime:
– Ensure that your vehicle is in a good condition when you plan to go on a journey.
– Ensure that the fuel tank of your vehicle always has sufficient fuel.
– Always lock your vehicle’s doors and keep the windows closed.
– If a stranger wants to talk to you while in your vehicle, do not open the window wide -only 5 cm is enough to have a discussion.
– If something seems suspicious, do not talk to strangers, rather be rude and drive away.
– Limit your trips at night or at least take someone along with you.
– Vary the route you travel to work and back, if this is possible.
– If approached by a stranger while in your car, drive off if possible or press your hooter to attract attention.
– Valuable items like a laptop and camera should be put in the boot of your car.
– Store luggage in the car’s boot where it is out of sight.
– Leave a gap between you and the car in front of you to give you room to escape, if anything should happen.
– If you drive late at night, slow down well in advance so that the light changes green by the time you reach the intersection.
– Constantly be on the lookout for suspicious looking characters.
