Close to a month after the Baviaanspoort prison was robbed at gunpoint, police are still not close to catching the culprits.
Correctional services has weighed in on the business robbery at one its facilities in Pretoria.
Ofentse Morwane Gauteng correctional services spokesperson said the department regularly assessed security measures at their facilities to ensure that similar robberies do not occur.
“The department has put in place special operations involving everyone including managers to look into this case and have increased the security visibility.”
Dr Johan Burger from the institute of security studies said some of these crimes were often found to have had inside help.
“It was found there was an element of an inside job when the Hawks office in Silverton was broken into where laptops and documents were stolen. And more often than not, it usually is the case and should be looked into.”
The provincial correctional service department could not confirm nor deny the possibility of inside help.
“We cannot comment on whether it was an inside job or not because this is subject to police investigations,” said Morwane.
Police have opened a case of business robbery after the Baviaanspoort prison was robbed in the east of Pretoria during the early hours of Sunday, 14 August.
Kameeldrift police spokesperson Sergeant Sam Shibambo said: “Two assailants, driving a green City Golf, forced guards at Baviaanspoort prison to open the gates around 00:50.”
He said the men took two firearms, a cellphone and a laptop from a safe in the guardroom and then fled.
The guards were not harmed during the robbery.
Shibambo said the investigation is still underway. He appealed to anybody with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects, to come forward.
