Young Pta debater to New York

Crawford college student's love for debate pave the way for him to tour the world.

A Pretoria student is to represent South Africa in a United Nations debate competition in New York later this month.

David Kabwa (19) said he started his debating career eight years ago after seeing South African parliamentarians in action on television.

“I have always been intrigued by seeing politicians debate on important matters in Parliament,” he said this week.

“This inpired me to join a debating society.”

Kabwa is a student at Abbotts College in the east of Pretoria.

His principal, Anthony Van Rensburg said: “This amazing student is part of the SA Youth parliament team.”

Kabwa said he was honoured to have been chosen to be part of the SA Youth Parliament, a national discussion platform initiated by Parliament for young people.

“Parliament wants to ensure that the youth continue to play a critical role in social transformation, reconstruction and development in post-apartheid South Africa,” he said.

“It creates an opportunity for the youth to engage Parliament, provincial legislatures, national youth structures and the national government.”

Kabwa said he was excited about going to New York to represent his college and the continent.

“I am not only going there (New York) to represent my school and my country but also to show the world what Africa is made of.”
