Response officers were dodging bullets when robbers shot at them after stealing a motorbike in Monument Park, east of Pretoria on Tuesday.
Hi-Risk unit operations director Arthur Crewe said they received a call from a resident whose dog had been poisoned two weeks ago. The resident reported a burglary taking place at a neighbouring house.
The unit responding to the call arrived to find that a motorcycle had been stolen.
Crewe said while the response unit was investigating, six men were spotted with the motorbike.
“Three males were pushing a bike and the other three were alongside them.”
He said when the unit gave chase, three of the men managed to flee in one direction while the others abandoned the bike and fled towards the R21 highway.
Crewe said as they gave chase the men heading towards the highway fired shots at at the responding unit.
“As we perused, we returned fire,” he said.
Crewe said officers in a unit vehicle who heard gunshots, blocked off a street. The interception led to the men being caught, he said.
“One of the perpetrators was shot in his upper leg.”
Crewe said when the men were caught they had no weapons on them.
The three men were handed to Brooklyn police while the remaining three were still at large.
Crewe said it was believed the men had poisoned the dog to gain entry to the resident’s home.
Police were not available for comment at the time of publishing.
