Crime down in Sunnyside and CBD
Police Minister Nathi Nhleko released the country’s crime statistics in Parliament last Friday.
Crime in Sunnyside and Pretoria central has shown a general decline, the latest crime statistics revealed.
The figures were released in Parliament last week, comparing the period from April 2014 to March 2016 with previous years.
There has been an overall decrease in murder cases in Pretoria central. Sixteen cases were reported in past year, with 14 cases in the previous one.
In Sunnyside however, the number of murder cases remained unchanged with six cases reported in each of the past two years.
Sexual offences decreased in Sunnyside and Pretoria central with 65 new cases reported against 63 the y ear before. In Pretoria the figure dropped from 101 to 94.
Shoplifting on the other hand, increased in both areas. Shoplifting in Sunnyside increased from 287 cases to 338 while the number rose from 34 to 68 in the CBD.
Assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm also increased in both areas.
In the CBD, the number rose from 454 to 461 and in Sunnyside from 45 to 74.
Cases of attempted murder differed in the two precincts.
In Sunnyside, attempted murder cases increased from 15 to 26 in while the figure in Pretoria central dropped from 28 to 21.
Drug-related crime increased in Sunnyside while it decreased in Pretoria central.
A total of 614 cases from last year rose to 765 in the past year.
In Pretoria central, 2 122 drug-related cases were recorded in last year, dropping to 2 116 in the past year.
Figures for car hijacking, theft of a motor vehicle or motorcycle, and theft out of a motor vehicle all declined in both areas.
In Sunnyside, the number of car hijackings declined from 46 cases to 44 and in Pretoria central from 49 to 46.
Theft of a motor vehicle or a motorcycle in Sunnyside declined from 490 to 424, and in Pretoria central from 412 to 409.
Theft out of motor vehicle decreased from 1617 in Central to 1376 while in Sunnyside it also decreased from 1943 to 1614 cases.
Burglaries at both non-residential areas and residential areas declined in both areas.
Burglaries at residential areas in Sunnyside decreased slightly from 615 to 516 and Pretoria central saw a bigger drop from 161 to 109
Burglaries at non-residential areas declined in Sunnyside from 200 cases to 127 and in Pretoria central from 410 to 235.
