Woman escapes kidnappers

A 21-year-old girl from Atteridgeville has been found after she alleges she was kidnapped on 2 September.

Basestana Tumelo (21), who was reported missing on 2 September, was found in Rustenburg on Wednesday where she reportedly managed to escape from her kidnappers.

Keffiah Lekala, Tumelo’s mother, was in tears when she told Rekord on Wednesday evening her kidnapped daughter had been found.

“She managed to escape from her kidnappers. I am not sure what exactly happened yet, but she told me she was kidnapped when I spoke to her over the phone on Wednesday.”

Lekala said she did not yet have all the details on how Tumelo was kidnapped or how she escaped.

“We were all so worried about her, we did not know what had happened to her but when we called her phone [on Friday] and some random guy answered we realised she had been kidnapped.”

“She says she is safe. Even though she says that, I am still scared on her behalf because they (kidnappers) have not been caught yet, they are still somewhere out there on the streets,” said Lekala.

She said Tumelo might know one of the men who kidnapped her and believed he was from the North West.

Tumelo, who had been staying with her aunt in Rustenburg, was safely back home with her mother and went to lay a charge of kidnapping at the police station on Thursday.
