Two nabbed in house burglary attempt
The two were found in Waltloo in possession of housebreaking tools.
Two men were arrested in possession of housebreaking tools in Waltloo, east of Pretoria on Friday afternoon.
Police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the two attempted to break into a Silverton house around 12:00.
He said the men attempted to lift an electric-operated gate off its rail to gain entry into the residence but were spotted by the homeowner’s daughter who was inside the house.
“The two men quickly fled,” Sepato said.
The daughter inside the house notified a local CPF group on WhatsApp who alerted police.
Sepato said police started searching for a white VW Caravelle.
Police later found the Caravelle pulled over by Tshwane metro police for a cracked windscreen.
“The two men attempted to flee as police approached them,” Sepato said.
He said the officers quickly gave chase and caught the men.
“Upon questioning, we identified the VW Caravelle belonged to the father of one of the suspects.”
Sepato said a docket for possession of housebreaking tools was opened at the station.
“Boxes were also found inside the vehicle which police believed would have been used to stash the stolen items.”
Sepato said it was unfortunate that burglars often used the vehicles of family members to commit crime.
He said a month ago another arrested man had used his father’s vehicle in an armed robbery.
“We urge parents to be aware of their children’s activities.”
He said it was always sad for police when they had to call parents and inform them their vehicle had been involved in a criminal act.
