Awareness created for Down’s sufferers

“They are human and not Down's syndrome.”

With the Olympic Games fresh in our minds and the Paralympics about to create another showdown among countries, the Down Syndrome Association Pretoria/Tshwane celebrated a sport themed casual day on 2 September.

The event was held at the Glen venue and conference centre in Pretoria to create awareness and let the public socialise with the young sufferers.

Down’s Syndrome Association Pretoria/Tshwane spokesperson Karen van Rooyen said residents had to see that the sufferers could be part of the community and should not be excluded.

“They are human and not Down’s syndrome,” she emphasized.

The event was also used to raise money for the association and R17 000 was collected.

Van Rooyen said everyone was up for the challenge to raise money. She said the event enriched the lives of many and left the families of sufferers and the association filled with warmth.

The money would go towards early childhood development for children with Down’s syndrome, speech occupational therapy and music therapy at the Lyttelton branch.
