UP student rubs face with condom

The UP student rubbed her face with a condom after pepper spray was unleashed on the crowd.

A University of Pretoria (UP) student rubbed her face with a condom after she was pepper-sprayed during the FeesMustFall protest on Wednesday.

The pepper spray had been used to disperse protesting students at Steve Biko Academic Hospital.

The faculty of health sciences students were demonstrating peacefully when the police pepper-sprayed them.

The students said they were there to find out why the institution was open while the #Feesmustfall protest was ongoing, and had given the authorities two hours to answer.

But had to disperse unsatisfied after being pepper-sprayed.

In a statement UP management said it had reopened the university in an effort to ensure students completed their studies in the remaining weeks of the academic year.

“We recognise that it is imperative for teaching and learning to continue, and for final assessments and examinations to be concluded this year.”

UP said arrangements were being made for on-campus lectures and study material to be available online,  or by other means soon to be detailed.

Meanwhile police spokesperson Sally de Beer said two students were arrested at the Hatfield campus on Tuesday.

The two appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, on charges of public violence.

No new arrests had been made by noon on Wednesday, she said.

TUT said to enable students to complete the academic year, the school season had been extended from 9 to 15 December.
