SA actor takes a break at Pretoria home

Speaking to Rekord at his Pretoria home, Boikie said Lesilo Rula was the most prominent horror story to be seen in SA at the time.

South African actor Moditle “Boikie” Pholo (67) says if granted the opportunity, he would renew his favourite TV series, Lesilo Rula.

The show landed him numerous awards in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Speaking to Rekord at his Pretoria home, Boikie said Lesilo Rula was the most prominent horror story in SA at the time.

In the series, Boikie’s character portrayed a ruthless villain, Raitlhoane, who brought to life a zombie called Lesilo to terrorise his community whenever he was unhappy.

Raitlhoane used a little horn to summon the zombie.

“I was the only one able to talk to the zombie and tell it what to do.”

“This series put me in the limelight. Even today, when people see me they tell me to blow the little horn and ask the zombie to bring them some money,” he laughed.

Born and raised in Orkney, Boikie worked as a teacher in Klerksdorp for a while but said he was always drawn to radio and television.

“I used to be part of radio acts and it made me very happy and I always wanted to do more. We were a small group of friends who were seen as upstanding citizens within our communities, because we enjoyed what we did.”

“Money wasn’t the main thing. We wanted to entertain people with our talents. We made a life with the little we had.”

Going back to his very first television appearance in a drama called Phepheng (Scorpion), Boikie said he knew acting was meant for him.

He recalled memories from the past: being the presenter of the popular game show Balekane and being on Make Your Mark, an election educational programme he described as the most entertaining programme he had been part of.

He said being an actor meant you had to be versatile and adapt to different roles.

“As actors we send a message to people about what is happening in another world, whether it is romance or just being the bad guy.”

Boikie said playing alongside the popular South African singer and actor Steve Hoffmeyr in the Afrikaans movie Treurgrond was a great experience and it was a great movie to be involved with.

“Steve is a very kind person. We had a wonderful time on the Treurgrond set.”

In other movie roles, Boikie played Namibian president Sam Nujoma during the struggle for liberation, alongside famous American actor Danny Glover.

Other movie titles included: The High Diamonds, which was produced abroad and the Afrikaans movie, Pad na jou hart.

He has won numerous best actor awards throughout his career and has been nominated for various categories.

“The best actor award that means the most to me was for my role in Lesilo Rula.”

Boikie said most of the awards and nominations he has received were portrayals of the love that he had for his talent.

He said there were a few roles in the pipeline, but for now, he was taking it easy at home with his wife, Mary.

“We keep ourselves busy cleaning and building the garden and watching television and listening to the radio, of course.”

Boikie did not want to speak out about the future roles, but said the next one was going to be a good one.
