Sport highlights 20-22 January
There is plenty of sports action on this weekend for both the couch potatoes and those on the sidelines to encourage participants.
While the Titans are not in action this weekend, there will be great action for cricket lovers at SuperSport Park, as well as an array of other sporting activities taking place this weekend.
Cricket
The first T20 match between Sri Lanka and the Proteas will take place at SuperSport Park in Centurion on Friday.
The action starts at 18:00.
Athletics
Most high schools in Pretoria have completed their inter-house athletics meetings and the interesting season of friendly gatherings start this weekend.
Excellent athletic performances can be expected on the grass athletics tracks of various schools in the next week.
The 42nd edition of the PwC George Claassen Memorial Road Race takes place this Saturday.
The race will start and end at the Pick n Pay centre in Fairy Glen in the east of Pretoria.
The event includes a 21,1km half-marathon, a 10km road race and a 5km fun run.
Race walkers will start first at 05:30 and the runners start at 06:00. The fun run will start at 06:15.
Football
While there is still no action in any of the big local football leagues, football fans will still be satisfied with all the action on TV from the African Nations Cup tournament in Gabon.
Tennis
The Australian Open tennis tournament, the first Grand Slam of the year, started in Melbourne this week.
Supporters of Scotland’s Andy Murray will hope he wins in Australia this time, now that he is the world’s number one player.
Murray got to the final of the Australian Open five times since 2010, but he could never win the title.
In the women’s singles Germany’s Angelique Kerber will also have to up her game to defend her title.
Golf
After the tension and excitement around all the action in the South African Open golf tournament at Glendower Golf Club last week, the focus moves to the Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club this weekend.
The Joburg Open started at this prestigious club on Thursday and some of the best players on the European Tour will once again be in action.
