Convent school excels

The school's deputy Principal Maria Alves said teaching and learning does not start in grade 12 but it started in grade R and that is why the school continued to enjoy their learners achievements each year.

Loreto Convent School achieved excellent results during last year’s academic year.

It achieving a 100 percent pass rate.

The Pretoria central school has been working hard to maintain a perfect pass rate the past 23 years.

Deputy Principal Maria Alves said teaching and learning did not start in matric but in grade R.

This was why the school continued having outstanding learner achievements each year.

“Our grade R teachers are hardworking professional people coupled with an abundance of love and care and hence we go far and perform well at matric level,” she said.

Last year’s top achievers were Puseletso Matsapola who came out top of her class.

She said she wanted to pursue a career in medicines.

“I want to become a neurosurgeon,” said Matsapola.

She said wanted to care and help children from different countries by working for reputable organisations such as Doctors Without Borders as well as the World Cross War Memorial Children’s hospitals.

Matsapola was followed by Ntando Sibanyoni, Nandipha Nqoko and Palesa Maphutuma.

Sibanyoni came second in her class.

She wanted to become a business expert and help companies and organisations in dealing with their financial and business problems.

“I will be studying actuarial science at the University of Pretoria,” said Sibanyoni.

Sibanyoni enrolled for seven subjects at the school and achieved a 99 percent for accounting, 98 percent for physics, 96 percent for mathematics, 93 percent for life orientation and business studies 90 percent and 84 percent for English.

“Consistency was the important factor me. I worked hard and attended extra class even when I didn’t really need them,” said the 18 year old achiever.

Helping other learners in her grade also helped her.

“I would be reminded of certain sums that we did when I helped my fellow classmates,” she said.

“I also bought five different textbooks for each subject which helped in acquiring different information.”

Alves said it was important for schools to recognise individual learners for their own potential to achieve greatness.

“Our learners are taught holistically. They are taught self-discipline and that working hard leads to great rewards,” she said.

“Our learners are taught that achieving great results is not the only thing in life. They are taught to appreciate life and the fantastic opportunities God has given them.”

The school achieved 103 distinctions last year.
