Mouth guards are designed to:

  • Helps to reduce your chance of having a concussion.
  • Protects the jaw from fractures.
  • Reduce the risk of getting a jaw joint fracture.
  • Minimise impact damage on the teeth (cushion the teeth), from contact sports.

Mouth guards generally cover your upper teeth only. In some instances, (when you have braces etc.) your dentist can make you a mouth guard for the lower teeth as well. A good mouth guard must be protective, comfortable, resilient, tear resistant, tasteless, not bulky, cause minimal interference when speaking and breathing. Most important have excellent retention, fit, and sufficient thickness in critical areas.

The word “mouth guard” is universal and generic, and includes a large range and variety of products, from “over the counter” models bought at the sporting goods stores to professionally manufactured and dentist prescribed custom made mouth guards.
