Ward 58 councillor concerned about problems in her area

Ward councillor Leanne de Jager is concerned about problems in the area.

A number of serious problems still need to be taken care of in ward 58 said ward councillor, Leanne de Jager recently.

De Jager said there were problems with shelters for the needy in the CBD.

“The poor state of the shelters, particularly in Struben and Melgisedek streets, are due to the fact that maintenance was not budgeted for in the past and for this reason shelters had been left unsupervised,” she said.

“MMC for health and social development, Sakkie du Plooy, has however, been providing essential care which includes cleaning, maintenance of toilets, pipes and electricity.

Also, a project was undertaken to survey and identify all vacant city-owned properties to create additional facilities.”

De Jager said illegal dumping was also a huge problem.

She said residents could report illegal dumpers.

Suspected drug dealers could be reported to the Tshwane metro police.

“The launch of Hopeline in the CBD last week will assist the metro police in identifying the dealers as well as those targeted by dealers,” she said.

Other problems which De Jager identified in her ward included motor oil disposed of in storm water drains by street mechanics in Struben street and nearby streets.

“This poses an ecological disaster to the environment,” she said.

“Informal car guards operating around Church Square were also intimidating patrons to the historical Cafe Riche restaurant and causing damage to the infrastructure.

“A joint effort has been launched between metro police and city officials to regulate car guard activity and maintain the cleanliness of the square in general,” said De Jager.
