INFOGRAPHIC: Why are Pretoria’s pools closed?

“It is not true that there is a shortage of lifeguards,”

News on the closure of all municipal swimming pools within the Tshwane metro resorts has sparked a debate.

A statement was released earlier this month saying that the closure would be effective only on weekends and public holidays starting from 9 September, because there was a shortage of lifeguards.

A Rekord reader, who spoke on a condition of anonymity, alleged the pools were being closed because the lifeguards went on a strike demanding permanent employment.

“It is not true that there is a shortage of lifeguards,” she said.

City spokesperson, Lindela Mashigo, maintained that there was a shortage of lifeguards at the swimming pool facilities.

He said some of the lifeguards were on strike because they wanted to be paid overtime.

“They are contract workers and are being paid on an hourly rate,” said Mashigo.

The affected pools are Ga-Mothakga, Kwaggaspruit, Klipkruisfontein, Fountains Valley, Moretele Park, Derdepoort, and Joos Becker caravan park.

All resort swimming pools would be open weekdays.
