Objections stall east BRT line construction

The Bus Rapid Transit system roll out in Pretoria East has been stalled.

The bus rapid transit (BRT) route line 2B in Pretoria east along Atterbury and Lynnwood roads has been stalled due to public objections and a pending economic feasibility study.

MMC for roads and transport, Sheila Lynn Senkubuge, said an economic impact study had been conducted on the route to find out the implications it may have after public objections were received had been completed. The study’s outcomes and recommendations would allow for council to make an informed decision on the way forward.

With concerns of traffic congestion on the Atterbury and Lynnwood roads during peak hours, it would not be feasible to have one lane dedicated to general traffic and one to the buses.

Senkubuge said line 2 had been divided into sections; 2B trunk which was from Lois to January Masilela roads was under construction and due for completion early next year, 2C which was a link to Denneboom station would be completed mid 2018. The final section, 2D, which extended from Denneboom station along Watloo-Tsamaya road towards Mamelodi east ended at Mahube Valley Shopping centre.

Senkubuge cited the long public participation processes to address issues raised by the public, stakeholder engagement and construction delays as the contributing factors to the delay.

Senkubuge said phase 1, a 81km route, would be rolled out by 2025/26 and phase 2, 97km route, was due between 2022 and 2029.
