Three learners from Curro Hazeldean College were among the finalists for the national inter-school entrepreneurship competition.
The finals were held at a school in KwaZulu-Natal recently.
Among the five finalist teams competing was Team Hydro Wave, a team of grade 10 learners from Curro Hazeldean College.
Speaking to Rekord, one of the Curro learners, Alysha Gurnell, said she was honoured to have been part of the competition.
“My team and I came up with this concept where one can be able to generate energy while drinking water from a bottle. We really had an awesome time there and learned a lot.”
She said the competition taught her how tough life is.
Lara Rothwell from Curro explained the team’s concept: “The offering includes placing a little hydroelectric turbine in your water bottle, which generates power that is saved to a battery. Afterwards the stored energy can be used to recharge your smartphone or other devices.
“Competitions such as these enable learners to understand the principles behind entrepreneurship, and are vital in engaging learners’ critical thinking, problem-solving skills and resilience,” said Rothwell.
The competition offers a platform where they can present a business idea to a panel of experts and get relevant input on what they can do to make their business happen, she said.
