The mother of the 12-year old girl has provided a case number, confirming that the matter had been reported to the police.

The mother’s name is being withheld to protect the identity of the underage victim.

According to the mother, she had reported the matter to the residential body corporate and hoped the matter would soon be resolved.

“Two sisters residing in our complex decided by themselves to beat my daughter for whatever reason.”

The two teenage boys had apparently said something which the 12-year old repeated, causing the two girls to attack her.

“As I understand it, my daughter wasn’t directly speaking to anyone when she repeated their words, but the two teenage sisters then decided to tackle my daughter about this.”

The mother said the beating her daughter took was so severe that she had to cut her daughter’s hair.

“Her hair was mangled and I had to cut it.”

She said she was angry and the law should take its course.

“My child is in counselling, because she is left traumatised by the episode. She’s also on medication to help her sleep.”

Pretoria motivational speaker Erich Posthumus from the Good News Factory said adrenaline usually kicked in when youngsters got involved in fights, leading children to lose perspective which made matters even worse.

He said when it came to bullying, some factors should be understood before intervention.

“We have to understand why the bullies are doing what they do and what the payoff is.”

Posthumus said one had to consider why bullies went around hurting others and looking for attention.

It was worth trying to find out if the victim had displayed conduct that aggravated the bully.

Posthumus stressed every story had two sides and mediators had to consider the entire picture before coming to a conclusion.

“The mediator has to be creative and has to strive to work towards a win-win situation for both parties to find new solutions to problems.”

He said if the law had been transgressed or if there had been any form of abuse, strict action should be taken to make it clear to offenders that society would not tolerate bullying behaviour.

“The words ‘sorry’ and ‘I forgive you’ – if meant from the heart – are important in any mediation process,” said Posthumus.

The police confirmed that a case involving minors is being investigated.
