A highly ranked Gauteng traffic department inspector was due to appear in the Pretoria commercial crimes court on charges of corruption and extortion on Monday, 8 January.
He was arrested following a complaint that he was confiscating motor vehicle licence discs and driver’s licences from motorists on the pretext that they had committed a traffic offence.
The victims would then allegedly be instructed to pay the officer upwards of R1 500 at his office to get their documents back.
A number of driver’s licences and motor vehicle discs were found during a search conducted at his office.

“Attempts will now be made to obtain statements from the owners of these documents,” said Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane.
The 57-year-old inspector was arrested in a joint sting operation carried out by the RTMC’s anti-corruption unit and several other authorities.
Zwane advised the public to report traffic-related bribery, corruption and fraud at 0861 400 800.
