Meet Belinda Lombard (18), the girl from Hoërskool Die Wilgers who obtained 10 distinctions.
While her peers had to manage seven subjects in grade 12, Belinda took an additional three yet still achieved 94 percent pass for mathematics and 91 percent for physical science.
“My biggest challenge was time. I had many obligations that I had to fulfil in such a short time. The number of subjects was quite a challenge,” she said.
Hard work and early planning were the recipe for her success. Lombard played hockey, softball, netball and was in the school choir.
She dedicated at least an hour a day to her academics and spent less time on social media.
“I studied and completed a small amount of school work every day. By the time I got to prelims I only revised by doing past papers.
“I didn’t waste much time doing unnecessary time-consuming activities. I watched less TV and spent less time on social media,” she said.
Her performance was not a surprise as she had been excelling since grade 10 and awarded the school’s top achiever prize in 2016.
The young achiever advised matriculants to make time for other activities apart from school work, by working a little bit every day to avoid stress.
“Don’t get too stressed up, as too much stress is negative. The most important thing is to enjoy your year by making the best out of it – this is your last school year.”
She plans to study BSc mathematics and genetics at the University of Cape Town and hopes to become a high school maths teacher.
