A 45-year-old man was arrested for attempting to defraud a bank in Silverton on Wednesday.
The man allegedly tried to apply for a loan worth R150 000 with what appears to be a fraudulent pay slip, said Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato.
“An employee at the bank thought the document was suspicious and called the police,” Sepato said.

The information on the pay slip listed the department of education as the man’s employer with a gross monthly salary of about R20 000.
“The pay slip says he had been employed by the department since 2015. However, after checking his identity document it was discovered that the man was actually employed by a trailer-making company in Waltloo, earning around R1 600 a month.”
Police would investigate whether he could be linked to other fraud schemes.
