Criminals in Soshanguve were hard at work the past festive season, police said this week.
There was a surge in crimes such as rape, car hijacking, house robbery and theft of motor vehicles in the area.
Criminals also did not appear to have had much sleep, said police spokesperson Constable Zanele Mtsweni.
Most crimes were committed in the early hours – usually between midnight and 03:00.
Criminal activity was not limited to these hours.
“The most dramatic crime we had to deal with was an attempted cash-in-transit robbery that took place at 13:30 in Block VV,” said Mtsweni.
A cash-in-transit van driving towards Soshanguve Crossing mall was shot at by a gang driving three luxury German vehicles – one charcoal-coloured Audi and two BMWs.

“They fled with an empty trolley and bag,” said Mtsweni.
The perpetrators were arrested and charged with attempted armed robbery.
Increased police visibility did help to stem the crime tide to an extent.
There has been a decrease in crimes such as business robberies, contact crimes and hijackings.
“We have some newly-trained constables joining us,” she said.
Mtsweni urged people to report crime at the nearest police station without delay.
