The Tshwane Central policing cluster did its part to ensure a safer Pretoria this weekend.
Cluster spokesperson Captain Anton Breedt said a total of 96 people were arrested for various criminal activities.
“We did our best to keep residents safe,” he said.
Breedt said the police held various operations throughout the cluster which comprised Pretoria Moot, Silverton, Villieria, Garsfontein, Lyttelton, Sunnyside and Brooklyn policing precincts.
Breedt said 56 arrests were for driving under the influence, with 34 of them in Sunnyside and 18 in Garsfontein.
“We focused on property and drug-related crimes, unlicensed firearms and road traffic offences such as driving under the influence,” Breedt said.

“We made sure our presence was felt in the cluster, by setting up roadblocks, stop and searches were conducted and we also did information-driven searches at various premises.”
He said the other arrests were for drugs, two for common theft, two for domestic violence, one for assault causing grievous bodily harm, one for rape, one for fraud, seven for shoplifting, one for common robbery, one for being in the possession of a dangerous weapon and five for possession of stolen property.
Breedt said operations would continue throughout 2018 to ensure a heightened police visibility in the cluster.
“We will also turn our focus on malls and public areas,” he said.
Breedt said residents were once again urged to report suspicious activities, persons or vehicles in their residential areas to the police on 08600 10111 or by SMS to 32211.
“Assist the Gauteng police to fight fraud, corruption, any unethical behaviour or any other suspicious activity that can be detrimental to our success,” Breedt said.
“We need to stand together to fight back against crime.”
