Police suspected the motive for the murder was robbery.

A family friend said Du Toit went riding that Sunday and when he didn’t return home, friends and family became concerned.

At the time, Lyttelton police spokesperson Dave Miller said police had gathered forensic evidence at the scene.

Miller warned bikers and runners to be vigilant at all times, especially when alone.

“But if you have to, opt for populated areas.”
