UPDATE: Man accused of East man’s murder set free

Police could not link him to the crime.

Police have dropped charges against one of the two arrested for the murder of a Pretoria East resident.

The two were arrested in Sunnyside after they were found in possession of a stolen vehicle believed to have been stolen during a robbery in which Maxwell van Rooi (32) was killed.

“Charges have been withdrawn against the one suspect and he was released,” said police spokesperson Captain Koba Brits.

Brits said there was insufficient evidence to link the man to the crime as he appeared to have just been a passenger in the stolen vehicle.

The body of Van Rooi (32) was found on 7 November afternoon at his house in Moreleta Park.

He had been reported missing by his family after they had not heard from him in 24 hours.

Police believe he was killed during a robbery the day before, and his car stolen.

Brits said the man found driving the car would remain in police custody until his court appearance on 6 March.
