Matric learners at Cornerstone College have taken the initiative to thank the Silverton police for their outstanding commitment to the safety of communities.
The learners visited the police station on Valentine’s day, to share cupcakes along with some love and words of encouragement to the men and women in blue.
“We want to show appreciation for all your hard work and would like to thank you for everything you do for us,” said the school’s deputy head boy, Kopano Phaleng (19).
Phaleng said police were not often given credit for their good work and that acknowledging their good work would reinforce their commitment to fight crime.

Grade 12 tutor Jomarie Botes said this was part of the school’s outreach programme themed “maximum impact”.
Botes said each grade was given the liberty to work on an outreach project of their choice, which they believed would make a positive contribution to society.
“Policing is a thankless job. Nobody really thanks them for their hard work,” she said.
Silverton police spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said the gesture by the learners gave the police more courage to uplift their pledge towards fighting crime.
“We are happy our efforts are being recognised, because we are often at the end of community criticism.”
Sepato said interaction with different institutions within society were very important in the fight against crime.
“We usually have good relations with schools so that when learners hear or see something even within their own schools, they are comfortable to report it to the police,” he said.

“We also educate learners about the consequences of crime and try to ensure that they are well empowered to make the correct decisions.”
Sepato urged all members of the community to be the eyes and ears of the police for effective crime control.
“We thank the school management and the learners for their recognition and that we should continue to work together for a better South Africa.”
