A police officer was killed and another attacked in Sunnyside on Friday night.
The incident happened at the corner of Leyds and Esselen Streets just after 23:00, according to Sunnyside police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela.
“The two constables were conducting stop-and-searches in the area when they were attacked by the suspect(s) who then fled the scene,” said Mavimbela.
The 34-year-old male constable succumbed to his injuries at the hospital, he said.

Mavimbela said the deceased’s colleague was in a stable condition in hospital.
Police are investigating the incident and a case of murder and attempted murder was opened, Mavimbela added.
“The SA police are saddened by the death of yet another on-duty member, and pray for the speedy recovery of the member in the hospital.”
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or have knowledge of the identity or whereabouts of the attacker(s) is urged to report it at their nearest police station or to call Crimestop at 08600-10111.
