UPDATE: Sunnyside cop still in hospital after attack

His colleague succumbed to his injuries following the attack.

A Sunnyside constable (41) who survived an attack on Friday is still in hospital.

His colleague was killed when a 21-year-old man stabbed the two officers with an undetermined sharp object while they executed a stop-and-search operation in Sunnyside.

Gauteng police spokesperson Mathapelo Peters said the man was arrested less than 24 hours after the incident, following a tip-off, and was expected in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today.

“He has been charged with murder and attempted murder,” she said.

Peters said the surviving victim was in a stable condition.

“We hope that this will assist the family [of the deceased] to start healing,” said Gauteng police commissioner Lieutenant-General Deliwe de Lange.
