Slain Bronkhorstspruit magistrate’s father dies

“He was badly affected by his son's death and I believe it may have led to his own death.”

The father of slain Bronkhorstspruit magistrate Victor Mabunda died on Sunday after he collapsed at his home in Zava Village in Limpopo.

Gwambeni Mabunda (79) was said to have been in good health, until his son was shot and killed in the driveway of his Bronkhorstspruit home in January.

Mabunda Jnr. was shot four times in what police suspected to be a “hit”.

“He was badly affected by Victor’s death and I believe it may have led to his own death,” said family spokesperson Erel Ngobeni.

Three men have since been arrested in connection with the murder and are expected to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on 16 March.

Ngobeni said Mabunda Jnr.’s 72-year-old mother was struggling to come to terms with the loss of two people she loved.

“Just months ago she buried her son and now she will be burying her husband,” said Ngobeni.

Mabunda Snr. had seven children, five of whom have passed away.

“Victor’s death hit him hard,” said Ngobeni.

Mabunda Jnr. was known for his “no-nonsense” attitude in the courtroom, which the NPA believes may have been the reason for his murder.

NPA spokesperson Matric Lupondo confirmed one of the men implicated in the murder was linked to a case on which Mabunda was residing.
