Getting mugged is something one cannot prepare for. There are however precautions one can take to decrease the chances of becoming a victim.
Centurion police have warned residents to therefore be wary of certain known crime hotspots.
In Erasmia, hitchhikers and speedsters were the police’s biggest challenge, according to Constable Tumisang Moloto.

The most reported crime in the Wierdabrug policing area was the smash-and-grab, said spokesperson Captain Agnes Huma.
“The current hotspots are major shopping centres in the CBD,” said Lyttelton police spokesman Captain Dave Miller.
The following tips were provided against muggings:
– Walk in the centre of the road.
– Avoid walking alone, rather walk in a group. Muggers are more likely to target individuals than a group.
– Avoid wearing expensive clothes and/or jewellery as they attract potential muggers.

– If you are suspicious of someone approaching you, do not stop to fight or argue. Run as fast as you can and make as much noise as possible.
– Walk in a well-lit area. Most muggings happen in dark spots.
– Walk with confidence. The more confident you seem, the less of a target you are.
– If you are mugged, consider defending yourself if you have the skills or a weapon. Pepper spray can be an effective hindrance and can be easily carried.
– If you are mugged at gunpoint, keep calm and give them whatever they want.
