Robbers are using a new modus operandi to rob motorists in the east by placing obstacles or barriers on the road.
This forces motorists to stop and inspect their cars. Once they are out, they would be accosted and robbed of their personal belongings.
The latest incident happened on Sunday when a man travelling from Cullinan to Pretoria on the R104 noticed some rocks on the road. He was too late to stop and his tyres and bumper were damaged in the process.

He noticed three unknown males approaching him. He shouted and threw stones at them to chase them away and phoned for assistance.
The incident happened at around 05:15 in the morning.
The man was fortunately not injured.
“Community members and motorists must stay alert on the road to avoid falling victim to these incidents which occur in the early hours of the morning and in the afternoon,” said police spokesperson Captain Marissa van der Merwe.
Van der Merwe said Boschkop police were investigating incidents in which obstacles had been deliberately placed on the old Bronkhorstpruit road.
“There has been a surge of complaints from motorists who have found rocks and loose tree branches placed on the road, which have damaged some motorists’ vehicles,” she said.
“In other instances, big iron rods are used,” said Van der Merwe.

“No arrests have been made, but the area is being patrolled while investigations continue.”
