WATCH: East school collects water for Cape Town
Garsies pupils collected over 62 000 liters of water, which were donated to a school in Cape Town.
Day zero may have been pushed back for drought-stricken Cape Town, but a local primary school still wanted to help out.
Pupils from Laerskool Garsfontein recently collected more than 62 000 litres of water, which they donated to Van Riebeeckstrand primary school in Cape Town.
The project kicked off in February and pupils had only three weeks to collect the water.
The enthusiastic pupils brought water from wherever they could, with one learner collecting 3 334 litres.
“It was a competition amongst the learners and grade 7 learner Jonathan Bates collected the most,” project co-ordinator Anton Britz told Rekord.
Britz said the school received support from parents, staff and local businesses.
Parents Renier and Sunet Erasmus also generously donated the use of two trucks to transport the water to the mother city.
“There was so much water, it took us an entire day to load it onto the trucks,” Britz said.
Britz said every drop of water was accounted for “because no wastage would be tolerated”.
Pupils at the school were also taught about the value of helping others and saving the precious resource that is water.
“We tried to ensure our pupils know how to save water. It is important for us,” Britz said.
“We are grateful to all our sponsors, staff and parents who all motivated and encouraged the learners to make a difference.”

In turn, the pupils at the Van Riebeeckstrand school also shared the water with a neighbouring school.
