The Silverton police have warned residents to desist from giving lifts to strangers after withdrawing large amounts of money.
Spokesperson Captain Jan Sepato said a man was allegedly robbed of R8 000 in Pretoria Road after he gave strangers at the Silver mall a lift on Saturday.

“As he was moving to his car after withdrawing money, he was approached by a man and a couple who asked for a lift and he allowed them onto his car,” said Sepato.
“Just as the car stopped where they had indicated that they would be getting off, one of the passengers allegedly pointed a gun at him and asked him for the money.”
“We suspect that the man may have [been] targeted from the ATM while he was withdrawing money, and they may have seen that it was a large amount.”
This was the first such incident to be reported but the police urged residents to be vigilant anyway.

“We want to prevent it from becoming a trend. We ask residents to avoid carrying large amounts of money and if they must, they should avoid allowing unknown people into their vehicles,” Sepato said.
Residents are also advised to ensure they transact at the ATM in private.
