A man has been killed in a shootout with security guards in Zwavelpoort, his accomplices are on the run.
The guards were patrolling in the east of Pretoria when a cyclist alerted them to a suspicious vehicle driving without lights in the early hours of Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Captain Marissa van der Merwe said the officers spotted the vehicle on Schoeman Road and it flagged down.

“One reaction officer got out of the patrol vehicle to ask the occupants what they were doing. As he approached the car he saw a man hiding in the bushes next to the car.
“Two men speaking [in] a foreign language got out of the vehicle armed with pistols,” Van der Merwe said.
She said the suspects opened fire on the officers as the man in the bushes ran away.
“The reaction officers returned fire, killing one suspect. The other three drove off,” said Van der Merwe.
The officers gave chase and later discovered the getaway vehicle had crashed into the fence at a residential complex.
Van der Merwe said another was found inside the complex and arrested.
“Investigations later revealed that the men had allegedly broken into a plot in Schoeman Street.”
