Sunnyside police are investigating an incident in which a 28-year-old man was robbed in Sunnyside by four men.
It is alleged the man was lured to Tambotie flats on Easter Sunday via an online dating scam.
“The victim was allegedly stripped naked and had his two cellphones worth about R10 000 each; cash and a bank card, forcefully taken,” said police spokesperson Captain Daniel Mavimbela.
According to the victim, the suspects took nude photos of him using one of his cellphones.
His attackers threatened to publish them via his own social media account should he not cooperate and give them his bank card and pin code.
In another social media online dating scam, police arrested a suspect who was charged with robbery and kidnapping. He is currently out on bail.
Mavimbela said the arrest follows months of investigations, and that the arrested suspect is believed to be behind several other online dating scams in Sunnyside last year.
He warned the public to be careful when meeting strangers via the Internet, saying they must hold such meetings in public spaces and always let someone know where they are and with whom.
